An Intentional Journey

Life is hectic. It's hard to squeeze in our faith, particularly practicing what one believes. We want everything to be as quick as Google. But Alicia Britt Chole has a different message about faith in "The Sacred Slow." Inside the covers of this devotional one will discover an intimacy with God, how to intentionally feed the soul, and grow one's faith and relationship with God. Each of the 52 chapters are broken down into readings with reflective questions or as Chole calls it "guided responses." Together, moving at one's own pace, the exercises move one to intentionally experience God and his love. This is not a book to breeze through if one wants to get the most out of it. It is truly a journey of self-discovery. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Handlebar Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Midlife Reality Check

Columnist Jennifer Grant tackles the ups and downs of middle age. She looks at her own life and the changes occurring giving the reader an emotional and at times humorus glimpse at the middle years of adulthood. "When Did Everybody Else Get So Old?" provides a reality check for many parents with children. Grant writes, "When my children were very young...I orchestrated so many aspects of their lives...I realized their lives have been in God's hands all along..." (p.99). A sweet recollection of memories and maybe some not so sweet. But in the end it comes back to King Solomon's words "there is a time..." And so it is, for each of us to pass through this time known as middle age. Recommend this book for women going through this phase of their lives. Money or Family, Treachery or Honor

Elizabeth Camden's "A Dangerous Legacy" is a phenomenal, historic romance centered around rival news agencies, Associated Press and Reuters, and rival employees Lucy Drake and Sir Colin Beckwith. Lucy Drake is a telegraph operator who is a whiz at Morse code. That's her day job. On the side, Lucy and her brother, Nick, are fighting their uncle over the rightful owner of a plumbing valve their grandfather invented to allow water to be piped at the correct pressure. While listening on a secret line, Lucy intercepts a message in Morse Code of a possible murder on the US President and isn't sure of what to do until she explains it to Colin. Together they plot a scheme that turns more treacherous then either of them could have realized. Enough twist and turns to keep the reader on edge with a great cast of characters. Life's True Mission

Being overwhelmed appears to be a normal, daily thing for me as a wife, a mother, and a career woman. When someone asks, “Are you feeling overwhelmed?” The answer is a resounding “Yes!” Isn’t that just life? Well, Hayley DiMarco in “A Woman Overwhelmed” takes you from being overwhelmed with life to being overwhelmed by God’s love. Hayley bares her soul as she writes this book. It feels as though she is sitting next me, conversing these stories and thoughts. Each short chapter contains a personal story from Hayley’s life and a “thoughts to ponder” section. In the final pages, Hayley writes “If you are tired of being overwhelmed by life, then choose to make the mission of God your number one focus (p.189).” As simple as that. Take my focus off the world and focus on God! I highly encourage every woman out there to read this book even with a busy schedule, five minutes a day will make all the difference. Three Stories, Three Generations

As Dena’s health deteriorates, she gives her Christmas Quilt to Luella telling her someday she can pass it on to her eldest daughter. Thus, begins the legacy of the Christmas Quilt. Ride of a Lifetime

After reading "Driver Confessional" you may rethink your next ride in a taxi or ride-share vehicle. Antonio is a ride-share driver working part-time to support his family and attend law school. As he listens to his travel companions during their ride in his vehicle, he will pray for them silently or with them if they so desire. Antonio has what you might call a traveling ministry. What he doesn't expect is that one of his riders would leave behind her briefcase after telling him she is concerned about the company she works for stating "I'm in a tricky situation...there could be permanent consequences for me" (p.9). Upon discovering the briefcase Antonio attempts to contact his female rider but to no avail so he googles her address and drives to her expensive house where he finds her dead. Lucky for Antonio, his brother, Rocco, is a cop. They both begin investigating the female rider's death in their own way. For Antonio it is listening to his riders' conversations and asking questions. This journey around Washington, DC in David Winters first book in a three part series. I found the writing style to be different and at times a bit slow but the underlying premise makes a great story. I received this complimentary copy from Litfuse to review and give my honest opinion. Indubitable Truth

Wade pin 2Nora Bradford does not see herself as outgoing and beautiful, she would rather curl up with a good book, watch her favorite British series and be working as librarian/genealogist at her historical village. She wants nothing to do with romance after her break-up three years ago except for her imaginary romance between television hero Adolphus and Miss Lucy (Nora envisions herself as Lucy.). But her world is turned for a loop one day when she attends an emergency preparedness and response training course with her sister Britt and meets John Lawson. John Lawson is a former Navy SEAL, the epitome of masculinity per Nora. Fate has decided to bring the two together as John hires Nora to search for his birth mother. The outcome of the search is not what either one expects, nor is the surprise visit from the character who plays Adolphus. I enjoyed reading "True to You" by Becky Wade. A contemporary fictional romance that flows well with quality characters. My only draw back was trying to identify with Nora who owned a historical village at such a young age. That aside, I highly recommend picking this book up for a summer read. Visit http://litfusegroup.com/author/bwade for more information. Teenage Devotional

"Devoted" is an inspiring devotional that offers alot in 31 days of study. Although this is tailored for teenage and young adult women, I found some golden nuggets to ponder as I read through Marjorie Jackson's book as an older adult woman. Marjorie's style is fresh and appealing offering coloring pages to meditate upon, a challenge to take each day after reading the day's lesson along with a daily Bible verse. For someone so young, the author offers great insight that young women are experiencing in today's world. I would recommend this devotional to moms' of teenagers and young adult women. The moms may find reading this book along side their daughters to be a great time of bonding, learning, and loving as they grow their faith in Jesus. By thinking negatively, our brains become unhealthy leading to a quality of life that is unfavorable. By continuously having negative thoughts, it becomes a habit. A habit so toxic others don't want to be around you. In Unsinkable Faith, discover how to transform your thoughts and attitudes. Author Tracie Miles writes from experience "being positive is a daily choice, not a destination" (p. 98). Miles also offers how-to steps with Bible verses, reflections, chapter challenges at the end of each chapter to help the reader dig deeper and transform their thinking. At first, I had a hard time reading the first few chapters but as I plugged away I began to see the wisdom and truth behind Miles words. We are what we think. So I would recommend this book to everyone! Corinthians 10:5 NIV I received this book for free to review and give my honest opinion from Litfuse.

True Grit

Tracie Peterson has written another historical adventure romance based on a true event. Meet Grace Martindale and her two sisters, Hope and Mercy, in "Treasured Grace." After the death of her parents, Grace decides to go to Oregon City where her uncle lives. In order to get there, she marries the Right Reverend T.S. Martindale who needs a wife as part of the missionary mandate. Together, with her sisters, they join a wagon train heading west but tragedy occurs and the reverend dies along with many others as sickness spreads. With winter approaching, Grace decides to stay at the Whitman Mission. Here at the mission, Grace tries to adjust to frontier life using her herbal skills while meeting frontiersman Alex Armistead, the Nez Perce, and the Cayuse. Then a measles outbreak happens increasing tension among the Native Americans and the mission residents, particularly Dr. Whitman. Based on the Whitman Mission Massacre. I found the reading riveting. Did not want to put it down to go to work! You won't be disappointed if you are looking for a historical adventure. One Too Many Secrets

Shelley Shepard Gray presents a new book in the Amish genre, "Her Secret."
Hannah Hilty is young Amish woman who discovers an old Englisher boyfriend is stalking her. After receiving pictures in the mail, her family moves from Ohio to another Amish community in Kentucky to escape his presence. She lives in fear, not wanting to leave the safety of her family's house. Her brother and her sister are upset with having to leave their friends and family behind. There is animosity about the siblings.
With much coaxing by Hannah's mother, Hannah eventually leaves the confines of the their house and goes on a walk where she happens upon her neighbor Issac. Described as a "deer in headlights," fear immobilizes her and she rushes back to safety. She is afraid that "the stalker" will find her, she can not trust anyone with her secret. But she is not the only one with a secret. Her sister and her mother also have their secrets.
I really like Gray's past books and looked forward to reading this one. I was a little disappointed in the lack of depth in the characters of Hannah's parents or even more about the stalker. Overall, I enjoyed this quick read.

Home in the Heart

Priscilla Hutchens has only one thing on her mind when she arrives at Fort Bliss, Texas: claim her nephew and niece who have lost both parents, her only living family. Her plan is thwarted upon meeting the post surgeon, Major Elliot Ryder, who happens to be the children's uncle. Priscilla's father was a military man and died serving his country. His death and her mother's bitter attitude has turned Priscilla against the military. So begins Erica Vetsch's new book "Fort Bliss, Texas: Priscilla's Reveille."
The story had a nice flow while developing the characters. I enjoyed the addition of Major Ryder's interest in herbal medicines and how he was using them on the frontier to treat people. So if you enjoy historical romance add this book to your reading agenda.

On A Mission

"Still Life" is Dani Pettrey's second book in Chesapeake Valor series. This book continues the story line that began with "Cold Shot." Avery Tate and Parker Mitchell are the two characters featured in this adventure but the reader continues to get glimpses of Declan, Tanner, Lexi, Griffin and Finley. Avery is attending an art showing where she is to meet her best friend, Skylar. Only Skylar never shows. Instead, a mysterious photo of her shows up at the art show. Avery and Parker team up to find her with the help of their friends. They are sure they have their suspect, Sebastian, but then another twist occurs in the investigation. Join this adventurous team on another life and death mission.
An enjoyable read but pretty predictable as each couple pairs up during their adventure.

The Elusive Miss Ellison

Move over Jane Austin, Carolyn Miller has written a wonderful historical fiction "The Elusive Miss Ellison." Reminiscent of another era, the reader will find Lavinia Ellison a spirited heroine as she challenges the new Earl of Hawkesbury with her wit and selflessness to help others less fortunate. But Lavinia is also held to the past when she witnessed the death of her mother from a horse belonging to the Hawkesbury family. She does not think to highly of the new Earl until she is found collapsed in the field from influenza and smallpox, spending the next several weeks at the Earl of Hawkesbury's estate. She discovers a different side to the Earl. Nicholas carries the pain of the past as well not only from his brother's doings but from the war where he served and was injured. Fondness develops between the two of them, then Nicholas' mother arrives at the estate declaring Lavinia is not worthy to marry her son or is she! The book has some nice twists in it. I enjoyed being transported back to another time and place.

Last Words for the Journey

Steven Furtick has written a great book using the last word's of Jesus as he hung from the cross. The "Seven-Mile Miracle" takes the reader on a seven mile journey using the words of Jesus as mile markers. Furtick is able to take these simple words and break them down showing the real meaning behind each of Jesus' statements. These are words I hear every Easter but did not think of their profound meaning on my life or my journey in growing my relationship with Jesus. As the Lent season approaches I would highly recommend this book as reading material between now and Easter, or in fact any time. It will make you view the cross on Easter morning in a new light. Or if you are a new Christian this book will help explain why Jesus did what he did by going to the cross willingly.

Wild and Wonderful Alaska

A must read historical fiction of the Alaskan frontier and the Curry Hotel! Tracie Peterson and Kimberly Woodhouse bring to life the historic town of Curry and the building of the Alaskan Railroad in In the Shadow of Denali, a new series. Allan Brennan travels to Curry not just for his new job but to discover the truth of his father's death on Mount McKinley. His new boss is John Ivanoff, his father's expedition guide, and according to Allan's uncle, the person responsible for his father's death. He finds a friend in Cassidy Ivanoff, John's daughter. Together they try to discover what really happened to Allan's father. Great characters; brings the town of Curry back to life; and through it all God is in control. My type of read!!

Food, Friends & Faith

Wanda Brunstetter follows the format of her previously popular series "The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club" as she begins a new series with The Seekers. Meet Heidi Troyer who is looking for a way to fill up her days since she has no children and loves to cook for her husband. So Heidi decides to follow in the steps of her Aunt Emma, who teaches quilting, only she would teach cooking classes. After posting flyers and putting an ad in the paper, Heidi gets five very different people interested in her cooking classes for a variety of reasons. Who can predict what will happen by the sixth and final cooking class? As one reads the book the reader can anticipate what may happen to each person in the cooking class. There are a few cliff hangers for future stories I would imagine. An easy and fast read for those who like reading about the Amish.

Moments Treasured

Abby McAndrew is nine years old the summer of 1970 when her idyllic life, as she describes it, turns upside down in one tragic moment in Ann Marie Stewart's Stars in the Grass. Told by Abby, the story follows the brokenness and grief her family suffers after the death of her brother. It is a sad story that draws the reader in causing one to reflect back on life: the losses, the what-ifs, the pain, the memories. Her older brother, Matt, begins to act out. Her father, Reverend McAndrews, is not able to return to the pulpit after the tragedy, instead he turns to fixing clocks. Each family member has their own guilt about the tragedy; each responds differently to the loss. Through it all, Abby tries to make sense of what is happening to her family and how she feels. But her ultimate question is will her family make it through this period of brokenness intact and still remember her brother as he was.
The reader cannot come away without experiencing a roller coaster of emotions and be buoyed by hope.

The Dog Who Was There

Ron Marasco has presented an interesting twist on the story of the Jesus' crucifixion in the novel The Dog Who Was There. Barley is a dog who tells his story of living near and in Jerusalem. He has loving human companions but when tragedy occurs, Barley strikes out on his own. He meets Samid, a petty thief, and his friends. He learns of their struggles to survive and their take on the teacher from Galilee. Barley's encounter with Jesus as he walks to Golgotha as well as his thoughts on what he witnesses is moving. I particularly like the twist in the story as it ends. Very unexpected!!
