An Intentional Journey

Life is hectic. It's hard to squeeze in our faith, particularly practicing what one believes. We want everything to be as quick as Google. But Alicia Britt Chole has a different message about faith in "The Sacred Slow." Inside the covers of this devotional one will discover an intimacy with God, how to intentionally feed the soul, and grow one's faith and relationship with God. Each of the 52 chapters are broken down into readings with reflective questions or as Chole calls it "guided responses." Together, moving at one's own pace, the exercises move one to intentionally experience God and his love. This is not a book to breeze through if one wants to get the most out of it. It is truly a journey of self-discovery. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Handlebar Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Amish Christmas Mystery

In "The Gift," third in the Amish of Hart County series by Shelley Shepard Gray, the reader meets Susanna Schwartz, a young Amish woman new to the Hart County, Kentucky. Susanna is in her buggy during an ice storm heading home when she hears what sounds like gunshots. The noise spokes her horse causing her buggy to tip over. She discovers that the Amish man who found her along the road is Neil Vance, whose farm she now lives on. Neil is upset over his family losing their farm and takes out his disappointment on Susanna. But as the story progresses, he tries to become a friend to Susanna and help her discover who is behind all the incidents. A nice little Amish mystery and romance to read over the holidays. Timeless Adventure

Christy pin1A classic, "Christy" by Catherine Marshall, is celebrating 50 years. Written as fiction but based on the life of Marhsall's mother, this is a gripping tale of a young woman who volunteers to teach school in the Great Smoky Mountain's of Tennessee in the community of Cutter Gap. Christy finds herself in an alien world from what she is used to in North Carolina. She falls in love with the children and eventually the people of Cutter Gap. Not only does Christy learn about the ways of the mountain people but she begins to learn more about herself and her relationship with God. The book is based on her first year of being in Cutter Gap. If you remember the television show or never read "Christy," I highly recommend that you put this on your reading list. It may be 50 years old, however, the truths uncovered and discovered remain timeless! Midlife Reality Check

Columnist Jennifer Grant tackles the ups and downs of middle age. She looks at her own life and the changes occurring giving the reader an emotional and at times humorus glimpse at the middle years of adulthood. "When Did Everybody Else Get So Old?" provides a reality check for many parents with children. Grant writes, "When my children were very young...I orchestrated so many aspects of their lives...I realized their lives have been in God's hands all along..." (p.99). A sweet recollection of memories and maybe some not so sweet. But in the end it comes back to King Solomon's words "there is a time..." And so it is, for each of us to pass through this time known as middle age. Recommend this book for women going through this phase of their lives. God's Dream for You

Tiffany Smiling is the author of "Your Dream, God's Plan." For a young author, the topic she covers is full of wisdom and insight. As a tween, a spot is identified on her brain and begins leaking. So the family had to find a pediatric neurosurgeon willing to do the surgery. After the surgery, Tiffany is sent home to begin chemotherapy. While preparing to begin this therapy another doctor suggests Tiffany and her parents visit St. Jude's Childrens Hospital. By age fourteen, Tiffany would have her third surgery to remove the tumor on her brain. Thinking the tumor had been removed once and for all, Tiffany continues on as any teenager going shopping, attending events at school, and planning her life. Then Tiffany suffers a siezure at age 16. The tumor is back. Her doctor informs her and her family this is the last time he can operate for safety reasons. The surgery leaves her with paralysis on the left side. Tiffany had many plans, she was following the American dream when those dreams came to an abrupt stop. Then she begins to feel that God's plan for her life was not the plan Tiffany thought was her life plan. Tiffany writes, "God's dream isn't the same as the American dream" (p.74). Follow Tiffany as she brings God's dream to reality and the joy that it brings to her life. Learn how you too can embrace the plans that God has for your life. Money or Family, Treachery or Honor

Elizabeth Camden's "A Dangerous Legacy" is a phenomenal, historic romance centered around rival news agencies, Associated Press and Reuters, and rival employees Lucy Drake and Sir Colin Beckwith. Lucy Drake is a telegraph operator who is a whiz at Morse code. That's her day job. On the side, Lucy and her brother, Nick, are fighting their uncle over the rightful owner of a plumbing valve their grandfather invented to allow water to be piped at the correct pressure. While listening on a secret line, Lucy intercepts a message in Morse Code of a possible murder on the US President and isn't sure of what to do until she explains it to Colin. Together they plot a scheme that turns more treacherous then either of them could have realized. Enough twist and turns to keep the reader on edge with a great cast of characters.
