Rebecca Rice is a mail-order bride heading to Ruby City, Idaho to marry shopkeeper Mr. Fordham when her stagecoach is assulted. She is anxious to get to her destination now that she has no money. Exiting the stagecoach a Mr. Fordham introduces himself and off they go to get married but she wonders why the justice of the peace calls her intended Tad and not Theodore and uses the title Deputy before his name. An annulment is needed but the judge is not expected back for a month! Theodore is not happy about the mishap and seems more worried about his shop and appearances than to how Rebecca is coping. Rebecca uses the month to learn more about shopkeeping, helping her landlady and the people of the town.
